I had to write an essay about what I think the classroom of the future would be like. Below is my essay. What do ya'll think it will be like?
The Classroom of the Future
Today’s classroom some say does not seem that different from the classrooms of our parents and grandparents. Why has there not been much change? It is probably because educators are either comfortable with the way things are, some are nervous about change, feel it’s just too expensive to have change. However, I do not think our classrooms are going to remain the same much longer. There have been numerous advances in technology that have made technology much easier to use and a lot less expensive. Plus, with all the advances of technology there are new standards in education that include the use of technology. Therefore, the classroom of the future will not continue to be like our parents and grandparents, but will be student centered and technology rich.
Now, pretend it’s just ten years from now and you are walking into an elementary school classroom. The students will be arranged in groups of four to five. Each student will have a laptop computer out on their desk. Instead of a whiteboard or chalkboard there will be an interactive board like a SmartBoard that the teacher will use for direct teaching when needed. Another noticeable feature will be the absence of textbooks. Instead, all textbooks will be loaded on the students’ laptops. Therefore, they can adjust the font size that is comfortable to them and plug in headphones to listen to the books being read to them by screen readers, if that is needed or preferred. Programs like BlackBoard will be used to organize the class’ assignments. They will use them in a similar fashion that college and high schools do. However, students will not spend a lot of time just using their textbooks working on independent assignments. They will be working in cooperative groups on inquiry based projects using the internet, which will have even more reliable sources than now. The teacher will be guiding them along.
As mentioned earlier, this is just ten years in the future. Imagine what it will be like twenty years from now! It is exciting to think where technology is going to be then.
